We will have our final word wall test this Friday. I will test the children on the remaining 90 words. In order for your child to be fully prepared for second grade, he/she should be able to spell nearly all of the first grade words. He/she should be able to, not only memorize them for a test, but spell them correctly in everyday writing.
Word Wall Test
April 14, 2008Each week, for the remainder of the year we will be reviewing the word wall words. I choose five to practice on Monday and Tuesday and five for Wednesday and Thursday. Use should see these ten words along with some of the words in the same word family on the 1/2 sheets that come home every evening. If these half sheets are not in your child’s homework folder, please remind him/her to bring them home. On Friday, I will test over only those ten words and their family words. I will also give one or two sentences composed of word wall words. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Putnam County Library
March 21, 2008Last week, I showed the students how to go on the Putnam County Public Library and listen to stories. Several of the students were interested in checking it out at home. I have linked the website here. Once you are on the site, click on Tumblebooks and choose the story you’d like to hear. Have fun!
Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
March 3, 2008We will be celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss all week long by reading his books and doing different activities. I have several Dr. Seuss books to read to the students but if you would like to send in more, I will gladly read them. Please make sure your child’s name is on the inside cover.
CTBS Testing Begins
March 3, 2008Beginning next week, all first graders will be taking the CTBS test. The results of the test will be received by the end of the school year and will be one of many factors which help us determine if a student is ready for second grade. You can help your child be successful by making sure he/she gets a good night’s sleep, has a healthy breakfast, and has good attendance the week of the test. The following is the tentative schedule for the week of testing:
Monday – Practice activities
Tuesday – Reading/Language Arts
Wednesday – Mathematics
Thursday – Science and Social Studies
Thank you to the parents who have sent in snacks for testing. If you would still like to, that would be great!
Spelling Practice
February 20, 2008Beginning this week, students will be completing several spelling practice activities during their free time. Students will receive a spelling grade for the mandatory three assignments. However, students may earn extra credit for completing extra assignments. I would like this work to be completed in class, not as homework. So far, the children really seem to enjoy it. I will add more options in the next few weeks. Let me know if you have any questions.
Here is the information your child will receive each Monday:
You must choose at least 3 of the activities listed below. You may choose to do more than 3. Put a check mark next to the activity after you complete it. Attach all of your work and turn in on Friday. ___Draw or trace a simple shape like a square, heart or triangle. Fill it in with your spelling words. Use colorful markers, pencils or crayons if you’d like. ___Write each of your spelling words leaving out at least one letter. Give the list to a friend to fill in the blanks. ___Write your words in ABC order. ___Write each word using a red marker for the vowels and a blue marker for the consonants. ___Write each of your spelling words five times in your nicest handwriting. ___Use each word correctly in a sentence with a capital and proper punctuation. ___Write a short story using all five of your words.
